Gas springs are almost always filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas (N₂).

Here’s why:

• ✅ Inert and non-flammable → safe, won’t react with seals or oil.

• ✅ Stable pressure/temperature behavior → predictable force output.

• ✅ Readily available and inexpensive.

• ✅ Non-toxic and clean → suitable even for furniture, medical, or automotive use.

In addition to nitrogen, many gas springs also contain a small amount of lubricating oil inside the cylinder:

• The oil provides damping (soft closing/opening at the end of stroke).

• It lubricates seals and rod surface, reducing wear.

• It can also help with temperature stability.
